The standard system of weights used for precious metals is the Troy ounce. The world  standard used in the sale of precious metals is the Metric System, ( SI ), and therefore we list the weight of gold we are selling in grams. The following information is provided for your understanding of the standard weighing systems with conversion tables to help you convert Troy and Metric weights.
Apothecaries' Weight: Troy weight when divided, the pound into 12 ounces, the ounce into 8 drams, the dram into 3 scruples, and the scruple into 20 grains, is called apothecaries' weight, used in weighing medicines, etc.
Avoirdupois Weight: The name of a system of weights used in the United States and Great Britain for all commodities except precious metals, gems and medicine. The foundation of the system is the grain. There are 7000grains ( 16 ounces ) in one pound. Fourteen pounds equals one stone; two stones equals one quarter.
Metric Weight (SI): In France the metric system officially started in June 1799 with the declared intent of being 'For all people, for all time'. The unit of length was the metre which was defined as being one ten-millionth part of a quarter of the earth's circumference.

Over the years the metric system evolved, and in 1960 at the 11th CGPM the system was officially named the Système International d'Unités, or SI for short. The SI is the logical evolution of the metric system through the years and replaces all previous metric systems. It is a living dynamic system which is continually being improved to keep pace with devlopments in science and technology.

The metric system is a decimal system with the basic unit of weight being a kilogram. One gram is 1/1000 of a kilogram.

Troy weight: The system of weights used to weigh gold and silver, jewels, and the like. It was so named from Troyes, in France, where it was first adopted in Europe. The troy
ounce is supposed to have been brought from Cairo during the crusades. In this weight the pound is divided into 12 ounces, the ounce into 20 pennyweights, and the pennyweight into 24 grains; hence the troy ounce contains 480 grains, and the troy pound contains 5760 grains.
