This
is more of a general ghost town overview than a detailed atlas. It covers the
first 31 counties of Colorado's 63 counties, in alphabetic order. It was
originally the first of a two part set. Volume II is now out of print. It
corers the towns, mines, historical sites, and landmarks with historical
narrative, maps and illustrations. Leanne C. Boyd and Glenn H. Carson, 134
pages, 8 1/2 x 11 inches, soft cover. |

"In 65 accurate and readable maps the authors have illustrated the history of Arizona in its broadest sense-social, economic, political, and natural. Each map, the creation of Arizona cartographer Dun Bufkin, is supported by explanatory text....Whether one’s interests are in mining, military history, railroading, Indian tribes, agriculture, travel, or Spanish land grants, you will find data here. A bibliography of references for each map and a good index enrich this gold mine of information."-Arizona Highways This
Second Edition, updated from the 1980 census, reflects the new county
boundaries, the continuing Hopi-Navajo land dispute, the changes in Indian
populations and congressional districts, the growth in population in
Arizona’s counties and cities, and the decline of the copper mining
industry. An addition to the Bibliography lists new books about Arizona and
its history. Pickering Walker and Don Bufkin, 154 pages.

The Historical Atlas of Oklahoma has been an indispensable reference for longer than four decades. Issued on the eve of the Oklahoma Centennial, this fourth edition of the atlas is much more than an updated version. Oklahoma authors Charles Robert Goins and Danney Goble are joined by seventeen contributing scholars (including natural and physical scientists) and other professionals to present 119 topics. To explore each, one or more maps with explanatory legends, tables, and graphs are paired with an interpretive essay. Created
by cartographer James H. Anderson, more than 170 new maps—in full
color—chart Oklahoma’s rich and varied history and current population
trends. 320 pages with a cloth cover.

Texas, a land with a unique image, has remained for the most part within the American mainstream. In this historical atlas sixty-four maps, accompanied by brief interpretive essays, illustrate the most significant events and subject areas in Texas history and geography. Since
the arrival of the first Europeans in 1528, six different nations have claimed
sovereignty over the Lone Star state’s diverse regions. Readers and scholars
at all levels will enjoy learning from this atlas how Texas’s native
inhabitants and later arrivals responded to each other and to the state’s
varied terrain. Ray Stephens and William M. Holmes, 156 pages,
with a soft cover.

"Besides
the expected general maps of geography, rainfall, crops, fauna, etc., this
atlas contains fascinating surprises which make it an extremely useful
reference tool-maps locating Indian tribes, reservations, and California
rancherias; explorers’ trails; Spanish and Mexican land grants in
California, Arizona, New Mexico, and, especially, Texas (the latter,
long-neglected, very detailed here); cattle and sheep drives; wagon roads and
railroads; Mexican and Civil War battle sites; even the dispersal of the horse
among the tribes and the spread of the Ghost Dance phenomenon." Trust West".
Warren A. Beck and Ynez D. Haase, 172 pages with a soft cover.
